Background
Extracellular matrix protein 1(ECM1) is a soluble protein that is involved in endochondral bone formation, angiogenesis, and tumor biology. ECM1 has been shown to regulate endochondral bone formation, stimulate the proliferation of endothelial cells and induce angiogenesis. It also interacts with a variety of extracellular and structural proteins, contributing to the maintenance of skin integrity and homeostasis. Defects in ECM1 can cause lipoid proteinosis, a disorder which causes generalised thickening of skin, mucosae and certain viscera.
