Background

There are 16 isoforms in CA gene family in most mammals, of which 13 isozymes (CA I, II, III, IV, VA, VB, VI, VII, IX, XII, XIII, XIV, and XV) are catalytically active. CARP VIII was originally identified based on specific expression patterns in mouse brain by selecting 35 cDNA clones. Expression of CARP VIII was reported in a wide variety of mouse tissues both at the mRNA and protein levels. CARP VIII has been expressed as glutathione-S-transferase fusion protein (GST-HCARP VIII). CARP VIII expression might inhibit caspase-3 activation. Car8 may be a novel oncofetal antigen, which plays a role in tumorigenesis of non-small cell lung carcinomas.
