Background
Transferrin is a plasma glycoprotein encoded by the TF gene in human. Transferrin binds iron very tightly and reversibly. It plays a key role in controlling the level of free iron in biological fluids. Transferrin contains two specific high-affinity Fe(III) binding sites. The affinity of transferrin for Fe(III) is extremely high (1023 M−1 at pH 7.4) but decreases progressively with decreasing pH below neutrality. Low transferrin level in plasma could associate with anemia and chronic liver disease, while high plasma level of transferrin could indicate iron deficiency anemia.
