Background

Apolipoprotein A-II (ApoA-II), also known as Apolipoprotein A2 (ApoA2), is the second most abundant apolipoproteins in human plasma HDL, comprising about 25% of the protein mass. Synthesized by the liver and intestine as a 100 amino acid (aa) precursor protein, ApoA-II is processed to 77 aa mature protein. In plasma, ApoA-II exists as a monomer, homodimer of 17.4 kDa, or heterodimer with ApoE and ApoD. Mature human ApoA2 shares 96% aa sequence identity with chimpanzee ApoA2 and 48% -66% aa sequence identity with bovine, equine, mouse, and rat ApoA2.

It has been reported that ApoA-II plays roles in HDL remodeling, cholesterol efflux, modulating HDL interaction with enzymes and receptors, triglyceride metabolism, and atherosclerosis. ApoA-II is inversely associated with risk of future coronary artery disease. In addition, serum levels of an isoform of ApoA-II have been identified as a potential marker for prostate cancer.
