Background:

Aliases: Gelatinase B, 92 kDa type IV collagenase, 92 kDa gelatinase, CLG4B, GELB.

Matrix metallopeptidase 9 belongs to the zinc-metalloproteinases family involved in the degradation of the extracellular matrix. They are synthesized as pro-enzymes and most are secreted before conversion to their active form. Additional MMP substrates include cytokines, chemokines, growth factors and binding proteins, cell/cell adhesion molecules, and other proteinases. MMP9, along with elastase, appears to be a regulatory factor in neutrophil migration across the basement membrane. It is also reported to play a role in angiogenesis, neovascularization and wound repair.
