Metalloproteinase inhibitor 1, also known as Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 1, Fibroblast collagenase inhibitor, and TIMP1, is a secreted protein which belongs to the TIMP family. Metalloproteinase inhibitor that functions by forming one to one complexes with target metalloproteinases, such as collagenases, and irreversibly inactivates them by binding to their catalytic zinc cofactor. TIMP1 acts on MMP1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and MMP16, but not act on MMP14. TIMP1 also functions as a growth factor that regulates cell differentiation, migration and cell death and activates cellular signaling cascades via CD63 and ITGB1. It plays a role in integrin signaling and mediates erythropoiesis in vitro. TIMP1 also stimulates the growth and differentiation of only human and murine erythroid progenitors. TIMP1 can be detected in rheumatoid synovial fluid at protein level.
