Interleukin 32 (IL-32) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that can induce cells of the immune system to secrete inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and IL-6. IL-32 is selectively expressed in lymphocytes and the expression is increased after activation of T-cells by mitogens or activation of NK cells by IL2. IL-32 is induced by mitogens in peripheral lymphocytes, by IFN-gamma in epithelial cells, or by IL-12 with IL-18 in NK cells and in turn induces cytokine expression. In addition, it can also induce the production of chemokines such as IL-8 and MIP-2 / CXCL2. IL-32 may play a role in both innate and adaptive immune responses. It activates typical cytokine signal pathways of NF-kappa-B and p38 MAPK.
