Background
Heat shock protein 60 (HSP60), also knwon as 60 kDa chaperonin, Chaperonin 60, CPN60, HuCHA60, Mitochondrial matrix protein P1, P60 lymphocyte protein, or HSPD1, is a 573 amino acid molecular chaperone and is highly homologous to the bacteria groEL protein. HSP60 exists in the mitochondria and cytoplasm, the cell surface, the extracellular space, and the peripheral blood. HSP60 is a mitochondrial chaperonin involved in folding, assembly, and transport of newly imported protein from cytoplasm into mitochondria, in addition to protecting cells from heat shock. HSP60 has been implicated in myelinogenesis, neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, cancer, and immunological disorders.
