Background

CD5L, also known as Sp alpha, is a secreted protein that is a member of the SCSR (scavenger receptor cysteine rich) superfamily. It is expressed in thymus, liver, spleen and lymph nodes which are associated with immunoglobulins of IgM isotype in the plasma/serum. CD5L/Sp alpha exhibits a high degree of homology with the extracellular regions of CD5 and CD6, exhibiting three SCSR domains and the SRCR domain 1 of CD5L retains both the LPS and LTA binding activities. CD5L functions as a pattern recognition molecule by binding both lipoteichoic acid (LTA) on Gram positive and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on Gram negative bacteria. It may also play a role in the regulation of the immune system and work as an inhibitor of apoptosis.
