Background

CD16 is a low affinity Fc receptor. In human, CD16 is expressed as two distinct forms (CD16a and CD16b) encoded by two different highly homologous genes in a cell type-specific manner. CD16b is a low-affinity, GPI-linked receptor expressed by neutrophils and eosinophils, whereas CD16a is an intermediate affinity polypeptide-anchored transmembrane glycoprotein expressed by a subset of T lymphocytes, natural killer (NK) cells, monocytes, and macrophages. The receptors bind to the Fc portion of IgG antibodies which then activates the NK cell for Antibody-Dependent Cell-mediated Cytotoxicity (ADCC). A lack of CD16 in a given population of neutrophils may indicate prematurity, as could be caused by a left-shift due to neutrophilic leukocytosis induced by tissue necrosis or bacterial infection.
