Serine/threonine-protein kinase 4, also known as Mammalian STE20-like protein kinase 1, STE20-like kinase MST1, is a cytoplasm and nucleus protein which belongs to the protein kinase superfamily, STE Ser/Thr protein kinase family and STE20 subfamily. STK4 acts upstream of the stress-induced mitogen-activated protein kinase cascade. The encoded protein can phosphorylate myelin basic protein and undergoes autophosphorylation. STK4 is expressed in prostate cancer and levels increase from the normal to the malignant state. It is a key component of the Hippo signaling pathway which plays a pivotal role in organ size control and tumor suppression by restricting proliferation and promoting apoptosis.
