Background
ASGPR1 ID a glycoprotein that forms the asialoglycoprotein receptor, also known as the Ashwell receptor, which is expressed exclusively in hepatic parenchymal cells. ASGPR1 mediates the endocytosis of plasma glycoproteins to which the terminal sialic acid residue on their complex carbohydrate moieties has been removed. ASGPR1 recognizes terminal galactose and N-acetylgalactosamine units. Many functional studies describing the kinetics of ligand-binding, internalization, and recycling of such receptors have been performed on the human hepatoma cell line HepG2.
