Background

Serpin A3 is also known as Alpha-1-antichymotrypsin (ACT or AACT), which belongs to the serpin family. Serpin A3 can bind DNA. SerpinA3 is an early-stage acute-phase plasma protein and a serpin that preferentially inactivates chymotrypsin, cathepsin G, and chymase. SerpinA3 can inhibit neutrophil cathepsin G and mast cell chymase, both of which can convert angiotensin-1 to the active angiotensin-2. It appears to have a multifaceted role and is associated with inflammatory reactions, Alzheimer's disease, malignant melanoma and gastric cancer. Alpha-1-ACT, a serine protease inhibitor, is tightly associated with amyloid plaques in Alzheimer's disease and in normal aged human and monkey brain.
