Ribonucleoside reductase subunit M2B (also known as RRM2B or P53R2) is an enzyme belonging to the iron- dependent ribonucleotide reductase (RNR) enzyme family, which is essential for DNA synthesis. P53R2 is widely expressed at a high level in skeletal muscle and at a weak level in thymus. It also expresses in epithelial dysplasias and squamous cell carcinoma. P53R2 translocates from cytoplasm to nucleus in response to DNA damage. This protein plays a pivotal role in cell survival by repairing damaged DNA in a p53/TP53-dependent manner and supplies deoxyribonucleotides for DNA repair in cells arrested at G1 or G2.P53R2 defect has been shown to cause progressive external ophthalmoplegia.
