CD44, short for Cluster of Differentiation 44, is Single-pass type I membrane protein of the hyaluronate receptor family. As a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA), CD44 mediates cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions through its affinity for HA, and possibly also through its affinity for other ligands such as osteopontin, collagens, and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Adhesion with HA plays an important role in cell migration, tumor growth and progression. CD44 is expressed in neuroblastoma cells. Epithelial isoform of CD44 is expressed by cells of epithelium and highly expressed by carcinomas. In cancer cells, CD44 may play an important role in invadopodia formation.
