Background
Antithrombin III (AT III), is a 432 amino acid glycoprotein. It contains three disulfide bonds and a total of four possible glycosylation sites. AT III is a serine protease inhibitor and plays an important role in inactivating several enzymes of the coagulation system, such as thrombin, factor Xa. It also exhibits strong anti-inflammatory activity. AT III deficiency is a rare hereditary disease that predisposes to thrombo-embolic complications. AT III levels are positively correlated with plasma total cholesterol levels, plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, plasma triglycerides and D-dimer levels.
