Background
Hemopexin (HPX) is a plasma glycoprotein belonging to the acute-phase protein family. It is expressed primarily in liver but also found in the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and in the retina. Hemopexin plays a role in maintaining and recycling the iron pool by utilizing its high binding affinity to heme composed of protoporphyrin IX and iron. It also functions in preventing oxidation caused by heme after hemolysis. A decrease in plasma hemopexin concentration reflects a recent release of heme compounds in the extracellular compartment. Heme concentrations in plasma increase after hemolysis, which is associated with several pathological conditions such as reperfusion injury and ischemia. Increased hemopexin levels have been associated with minimal change disease (MCD), sporadic Alzheimer's disease, heavy-drinking chronic alcoholics, hemolytic anemias, chronic neuromuscular diseases, and acute intermittent porphyria.
