Background
Fibrinogen (FBG) is a soluble, large glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 340 kDa. It is composed of two sets of alpha, beta, and gamma polypeptide chains. Fibrinogen is synthesized in the liver by the hepatocytes. During normal blood coagulation, a coagulation cascade activates the zymogen prothrombin by converting it into the serine protease thrombin. Thrombin then converts the soluble fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin strands. These strands are then cross-linked by factor XIII to form a blood clot. It has been shown that Elevated plasma FBG is an independent risk factor for coronary atherosclerosis and ischemic heart disease.
