Background

Pentraxin-related protein PTX3, also known as Tumor necrosis factor alpha-induced protein 5, Tumor necrosis factor- inducible gene 14 protein, TSG-14 and PTX3, is a secreted protein, which belongs to the pentraxin superfamily. It plays a role in the regulation of innate resistance to pathogens, inflammatory reactions, possibly clearance of self-components and female fertility. PTX3 is induced by IL1B/interleukin-1 beta and TNF and produced in several cell types, in particular by mononuclear phagocytes, dendritic cells (DCs), fibroblasts and endothelial cells. PTX3 activates the classical pathway of complement activation and facilitates pathogen recognition by macrophages and DCs.
