C2 is a glycoprotein synthesized in liver hepatocytes and several other cell types in extrahepatic tissues. Activated C1 cleaves C2 into C2a and C2b. C2a leads to activation of C3. Deficiency of C2 has been reported to associate with certain autoimmune diseases. Defects in C2 are the cause of complement component 2 deficiency (C2D). C2D is reported to increase susceptibility to infection, and is associated with certain autoimmune diseases.
