Endothelial lipase (EL) is a member of the triglyceride lipase family. It is synthesized by endothelial cells and functions at the site where it is synthesized. Endothelial lipase is expressed primarily in placenta, liver, thyroid, kidney, lung, testis and ovary tissue. As a lipase, EL has primarily phospholipase A1 activity. Endothelial lipase has been postulated to be involved in lipoprotein, and possibly HDL, metabolism.
