Protein Background GMPR2 is the single known metabolic step by which guanine nucleotides can be transformed to the pivotal precursor of both adenine and guanine nucleotides. GMPR2 catalyzes the permanent NADPH-dependent reductive deamination of GMP to IMP, and is involved in re-utilization of free intracellular bases and purine nucleosides.
