Background

Lipoproteins are complex particles composed of multiple proteins which transport all fat molecules (lipids) in the body. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is the smallest and dentest of the five major groups of lipoproteins. It contains 70% of apolipoprotein A-I, 20% of apolipoprotein A-II, phospholipids, and free cholesterol. Unlike the larger lipoprotein particles which deliver fat molecules to cells, HDL particles remove fat molecules from cells which want to export fat molecules. It exhibits various activities, such as cellular cholesterol efflux capacity, anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, antiapoptotic, vasodilatory, antithrombotic, and anti-infectious activities. Low plasma HDL cholesterol is an independent risk factor for the development of premature atherosclerosis. High levels of HDL (over 60 mg/dL) have protective value against cardiovascular diseases such as ischemic stroke and myocardial infarction.
