Background

Betacellulin (BTC) is a member of the EGF family in which at least ten proteins including EGF, TGFα, amphiregulin, HBEGF, and the various heregulins have been described. All of these cytokines are synthesized as transmembrane precursor proteins and are characteristic of EGF structural units in their extracellular domain. The soluble forms of these cytokines have been identified and are derived from the membrane bound forms of the EGF proteins by proteolytic cleavage. Human BTC precursor protein exhibits 79% amino acid sequence identity with the mouse BTC counterpart. BTC is expressed in a variety of tissues including kidney, uterus, liver and pancreas. It is also present in body fluids including serum, milk and colostrum. BTC is a ligand for EGFR, ERBB4 and other EGF receptor family members. It functions as a growth factor and is a potent mitogen for Balb/c 3T3 fibroblasts, retinal pigment epithelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells.
