A single-celled parasite called Toxoplasma gondii causes a disease known as toxoplasmosis. Although mild, flu-like symptoms occasionally occur during the first few weeks following exposure, infection with T. gondii generally produces no symptoms in healthy human adults. Severe toxoplasmosis, causing damage to the brain, eyes, or other organs, can develop from an acute Toxoplasma infection or one that had occurred earlier in life and is now reactivated. An IgM test is used to help determine whether a patient has been infected recently or in the distant past. In addition, IgM antibodies can persist for months to more than one year.
