IL1RL1 (also called ST2) is a transmembrane protein with a structure similar to IL-1R1. It is a member of the Toll-like receptor superfamily. IL1RL1 is expressed in several cell types including fibroblasts and mast cells. Soluble IL1RL1 also acts as a negative regulator of Th2 cytokine production and high levels have been reported in several disease states and conditions including asthma, sepsis and myocardial infarction. The ligand for ST2 is the cytokine Interleukin-33 (IL-33). Binding of IL-33 to the ST2 receptor, in response to cardiac disease or injury, such as an ischemic event, elicits a cardio-protective effect resulting in preserved cardiac function.
